Derby Scout Troop 3 tours England, Ireland,
Scotland and Wales

A contingent of 34 scouts, leaders and family members of Housatonic Council's Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby recently returned from a 16 day coach bus tour through Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England.

The scouts travelled on a coach bus with major stops in London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Cardif and Dublin. Highlights included tours of the walled cities of York and Chester, a "Beatles themed" tour of Liverpool, Edinburgh Castle, Tower Castle in London, Cardif Castle and Blarney Castle in Ireland. The group also attended The Edinburgh Military Tattoo, special dinner shows in Scotland and Wales and performances of "Riverdance" in Dublin as well as "Stomp" and "Mary Poppins" in London's West End theater district.

Scouting related highlights included participation in 100th anniversary of Scouting celebrations in Coventry and Peterborough, England, and an entire day visiting 40,000 scouts from throughout the world at the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Chelmsford, England. While in Ireland the troop attended a special evening gathering hosted by the scouts of Meelick and Limerick, Ireland. Troop 3 has had an ongoing exchange scout program with these Irish scout troops for 25 years.

Scouts who participated in the trip include Jim Anderson, Alex Oppel, Billy Boroski, Kevin Henri, Chuck Stankye, Tyler Stankye, Alex Neuendorf, Evan Altamirano, Noah Altamirano, Matt Frovarp, Chris Wentz, Mike Herde, Adam Cleri, Alec Hughes, Dan Howard, Matt Poppa, Stephen Poppa, Mike Tracz and John Murray. Siblings of scouts who went are Sara Poppa and Catherine Altamirano.

The trip was organized by Troop 3 Scoutmaster Randy Ritter and chaperones who assisted on the trip were Bill McDonnell, Mike and Cyndi Poppa, Chuck and Sue Stankye, Christine Jalowiec, Debbie Oppel, Cesar and Jenine Altamirano, Jim Anderson, Joshua Frovarp and Tom Murray.

The trip was made possible with assistance from Dr. Robert Feeney, The Katherine Matthies Foundation, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Bless Your Sole Seafood and the Verizon Wireless Foundation. While on the trip the scouts kept an online blog of their daily adventures, which can be viewed at www.troop3derby.org.

Troop 3 is sponsored by the Derby 2nd Congregational Church and meets there on Wednesdays at 7PM beginning September 5.
